Bible in a Year

I detest New Year's resolutions. It's probably because I can't seem to ever follow through, and I've decided in my old age (28 as of this week!) that I'd rather not "resolute" to do something if I'm not going to accomplish it. I realize this is a poor attitude to have, but it's part of my sinful perfectionist tendencies that say, "I'm either going to do something to the best of my ability, or I'm not going to do it at all."

That said, Dan and I have decided to start reading through the Bible in a year. We have not "resolved" to do this...nope. But we are planning on it with the Lord's help. Ok, ok, so it's basically a resolution. But this time Dan has initiated it and has been keeping me accountable, which has helped so much! Plus, it's so great to be reading the same things in our quiet times so we can discuss it later on in the day. Prayerfully, we hope to finish reading through the entire Bible by December 31, 2011.

We are using a plan that has you begin by reading a couple chapters of Genesis, a chapter in Psalms, a passage from Matthew, and a passage from Acts each day. I'm already in awe of how the Lord teaches me by confirming something in the New Testament with what the Old Testament passage said. It's pretty neat how all four passages work together. The Lord is so amazing in how he has woven everything together so intricately to his glory!

So, right now I am about five days behind...but that's ok, because there are some extra days at the end of each month to catch up... I like this, a forgiving resolution!

Do you have any "non-resolutions"? :)

  1. With the encouragement of a former roommate and perhaps the wisest woman I know, instead of having a resolution, she has a word for her year, usually just one. It's a word that will inspire her, encourage her, and perhaps become a fulfilled resolution of sorts in the end. I've decided to adopt that this year and chose the word "rest", one thing I have never, ever been able to do without feeling guilty. With so much free time now and a new country to explore, I have taken many an opportunity to rest, and I believe I am becoming an expert... though I do have a guilty twinge about once per day. :) I also added "follow through" to my word of the year, just so that I don't get lazy and watch American TV all the time. :) So far I'm enjoying having "words" instead of "resolutions"! :)

  2. You are blessed to have your spiritual leader doing this with you! We are doing the chronological again this year, in order of occurence. I share your awe of the way in which the Lord has sovereignly laid out His Word, so much application and parallel confirmations as we consider the "full counsel of the Word"! Have fun, don't be to hard on yourself!

  3. Same as you, reading through the Bible in a year. By Gods grace going good so far, but pray for me. I have a feeling around May 28th it will start to go down hill a bit :) I will really need the Lords help to stick through it, knowing I will be a better mommy because of it.
